10 Crazy Things From the 2014 Oscars
1. Hostess Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) broke the record for most retweets with this selfie taken live from the awards show. Featuring A-listers like Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Lupita Nyong’o, this photo trumped a record previously held by POTUS Barack Obama.
2. The pizza ordered during the ceremony was actually not staged. The deliveryman, Edgar Martirosyan, is the owner of Big Mama’s and Papa’s Pizzeria near the Dolby Theater. He originally believed the pizzas were ordered for writers but fatefully met with Ellen DeGeneres who soon ushered him into the sea of celebs.
3. After losing to Dallas Buyer’s Club Best Actor Matthew McConaughey, Leonardo DiCaprio is now 0-5 on Oscar nominations. In case you were wondering, the record for most nominations without a statue is held by Peter O’Toole with a total of 8 snubs — he was later awarded a Lifetime Achievement Oscar.
4. Perhaps the most emotional speech of the night, Lupita Nyong’o won the award for Best Supporting Actress on her first nomination.
5. Gravity took home an impressive total of 7 Oscars, including Best Director for Alfonso Curaon’s groundbreaking work. The reigning record stands at 11, a 3-way tie between films Ben-Hur (1959), Titantic (1997) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).
6. Just before the big show, Jennifer Lawrence fell along the red carpet. In a previous year Lawrence fell as she made her way to the stage.
7. Bill Murray used his brief time on stage presenting Best Director to honor his late friend, Harold Ramis.
8. John Travolta absolutely butchered Idina Menzel’s name while announcing her performance. What the hell just came out of his mouth?
9. Meryl Streep, a legend among the Oscar’s, holds a record for most nominations with a total of 18 dating back to 1978. In that time, she’s won 3 Oscars, 2 for Best Supporting Actress and 1 for Best Actress.
10. In one of the most well-deserved wins of the night, the cast of 12 Years a Slave received the Oscar for 2014’s Best Picture.
