I love sleep but I’m not convinced it loves me back. I have a lot of restless nights – I get too hot under the covers, I start thinking about what I have to do tomorrow, or I just completely ruined my sleep schedule over the weekend and my body needs to readjust.
My exhaustion has willed me into researching the best tips and tricks for better sleep – and I’m sleeping a lot better since putting them in practice. Here’s what worked for me …
Invest in a Bed
My grandfather always told me to invest in a good pair of shoes and an even better bed, reason being you spend the majority of life on your feet and back. My relationship with sleep made the most dramatic improvement when I purchased my Tempur bed. It honestly changed my life.
Sleep is virtually impossible to come by when you don’t trust your bed. My old mattress would result in a lot of tossing & turning – not the case with Tempur beds. I genuinely look forward to sleeping in it every night. The only downside I can even think of is I’m so dependent upon it, going out of town and sleeping on anything else can be challenging.
Don’t Drink Before Bed
This one might prove especially challenging for any college students out there – I know my time as a senior in college kept me out drinking late on the weekends. Limiting your alcohol intake does a lot for your health including improving the way you sleep.
Don’t be lulled into thinking alcohol helps you fall asleep – as soon as your buzz wears off during the night you’ll be waking up frequently.
Be Lazy at Night
Browsing the internet or watching television shows just before you turn out the light is detrimental to your sleep. Your brain is easily stimulated and you shouldn’t be letting it run free moments before you try and fall asleep.
Give yourself about an hour to relax before you hit the sheets. If you find your brain is especially active at night, don’t even allow yourself to read your favorite book – just turn on some light music and make yourself drowsy.
Get More Exercise
Find yourself with lots of energy at the end of the day? You might not be doing enough during the morning and afternoon to release it. Experts insist that regular exercise is one of the best ways to ensure you fall into your natural sleep cycle.
Find something you don’t begrudge yourself for so it happens regularly – take a late night stroll around the neighborhood, go for a jog before work or hit the gym and do some lifting. Find your groove and you’ll be sleeping like a baby.
