It is hard to imagine a world without cell phones, but there was a time when you couldn’t take your phone with you. Before cordless phones entered mainstream society, people could only make calls inside of their home. The evolution of the phone has made communication convenient and not only has the phone evolved, but so has the different functions available.
From the Rotary Dial to Cell Phone
Remember when you had to use a rotary dial phone? Yea, me either. Times have certainly changed, and the phone has definitely advanced. It’ even s no longer necessary to own a home phone as households are becoming “cell phone only”.
About a hundred years ago, rotary dial phones became popular in mainstream society. People begin s=using phones across America. More “modern” versions of the rotary dial didn’t come out until the 1930’s. In the 1930’s, the Model 302 was born. It was the first model to have the ringer inside of the phone.
Then, in the 1960’s, the first touchpad phone was created. This was a big deal for people who were used to having bulky phones! However, people still had the “party line” feature where one number was given to multiple houses in the area. You could pickup the phone and listen to your neighbor’s conversations.
Phones continued to get smaller and smaller after that, and eventually every household had their own line. The Internet then became popular and would be connected to the phone line.
Flashforward to today’s smartphones. Ever person who owns one has their own line, you can connect to Wi-Fi on your phone (and the Internet doesn’t drop your calls like it did back in the day where you had to have a DSL modem).
Additionally, back in the day when we missed a phone call, we had to wonder, who is calling me? Luckily, with the advancement in technology, we never have to wonder who is calling or who we missed a call from. Thanks to phone lookup technology and Caller ID, it’s easy to find out who is calling you.
The Evolution of The Cell Phone- A Brief History
Mobile phones have been around for almost four decades, changing their look and functions throughout the years. You may have seen some of the older cell phones, you know the huge phones with antennas. The only thing you could do on this phone was make a call!
In fact, they didn’t even have a screen back then. As the years went on, the cell phone started to evolve. We started using smaller cell phones, like the Nokia phone back in the 90s and early 2000s. These phones had a small screen where you could play a couple of different games and some even came with the capability to text.
In the 2000s, phones started coming with screens so that you could call, text and take photos. In 2007, the first iPhone was released and 11 years later, the phone has changed even more. Now we are able to open our phone up with face recognition as well as check emails and search the web on our phones. Apps that allow you to login to your social media websites as well as apps for productivity make it much easier to manage everything in one place.
In this day and age, there are also a number of different phones to choose from, but most of them offer the same things (like the ability to talk, text, email and more). The phones are now built to hold a large amount of storage (photos, videos, apps, etc) and are compatible with millions of apps.
Cell phones are a little bigger than the small ones we used in the 1990s, but they are lighter and much more powerful. And one major thing they have improved on? The camera! In fact, some cell phones take better photos than regular cameras. There are countless bloggers business owners, and other business professionals who choose to use their cell phones to take photos over any other device!
It’s a very interesting thought to wonder what the future will bring in the world of technology. We don’t quite know what cell phones will look like in the future, but one thing is sure, with technology continuing to advance, so will the cell phone. Perhaps, eventually, we will become our cell phones? We practically are glued to them, already.
