In 1977, George Lucas first introduced the world to arguably the greatest science fiction franchise of all time. Star Wars proved to be a masterpiece, introducing audiences to many things that are now ingrained in our culture.
Perhaps the most iconic idea from Star Wars is that of the lightsaber, a buzzing sword made from plasma with the power to block lasers and cut through virtually anything.
Not all lightsabers are created equal, though. Some are more powerful than others, and characters have introduced many innovations throughout the franchise.
We’ll talk about some of the most powerful lightsabers in this article.
What Is a Lightsaber?
Most of us are familiar with the basics of lightsabers, but there are a lot of more obscure details that few canon sources go into. One of these is how lightsabers get their power.
Lightsabers are powered by Kyber crystals, a special type of mineral that grows on a handful of planets within the Star Wars Universe. These crystals are force-sensitive and may even be slightly alive.
The grip or handle of a lightsaber is often metal, and the blade can be turned on and off.
1. Mace Windu’s Lightsaber
Mace Windu’s lightsaber is mainly known for two things. The first is the iconic actor who wielded it, Samuel L. Jackson. The second is the distinct purple color.
Canonically, the color exists because the saber used a rare crystal and because It represented Windu’s personality, which was mostly good, though he did study the fighting styles of the Sith.
In terms of film lore, the lightsaber is purple because Jackson requested it. He wanted to stand out during crowded action scenes.
2. Ahsoka Tano’s White Sabers
These rank among our favorite lightsabers, both for the colors and what they stand for. In Star Wars blue and green sabers are associated with heroes, and red sabers are used by villains. Ahsoka’s white lightsabers are a rejection of this dynamic and represent Ahsoka’s choice to take a different path.
Ahsoka has also wielded blue lightsabers for a time, but they don’t seem to be as popular as the white ones. You can get your own white Ahsoka Tano lightsabers online if you know where to look
3. Darth Maul’s Double-Bladed Lightsaber
One of the coolest things to come out of Star Wars, aside from an actual themed jet, was the double-bladed lightsaber.
With a painted face and one of the most famous lightsabers out there, Maul catapulted into the public’s hearts and is now ranked as one of the greatest villains in the franchise. We can’t say what it is exactly that made Maul so iconic, but he felt like a very real, very dangerous villain.
His saber wasn’t only fascinating, but practical as well. It could be split into two lightsabers in case it was cut in half or one stopped functioning.
The Most Powerful Lightsabers in Star Wars
Star Wars gave us the greatest weapon in sci-fi in the lightsaber. As the series expanded, so did the styles and possibilities of the special sword.
We’ve discussed some of the most powerful lightsabers in this article, but there are plenty of other lightsabers and other aspects of Star Wars to explore.
