Uncompromising and unflinching, 12 Years a Slave features the best performance of the year in Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Gravity
Say what you will about the campy dialogue in Gravity – there’s little denying this movie changed the cinematic landscape with its highly innovative visuals. A rollercoaster ride from beginning to end, Gravity reminded the audience that going to the movies can very well be an experience. Sandra Bullock turns in one of her most impressive performances given such demanding material.
Before Midnight
Before Midnight is the third in the captivating romance series starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. The chemistry between the two stars is undeniable, a quality forged from previous installments. For those unfamiliar, each movie in the series was shot years apart – the time between movies is almost adapted as its own character. It’s remarkable to see these characters grow together and Before Midnight is the stormy payoff.
American Hustle
American Hustle features a dynamite cast anchored by Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper, with electric performances from some of Hollywood’s leading ladies, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence. Set in authentically seventies world of unadulterated delirium, the film mostly transcends genre but borderlines on comedy throughout. This movie is an instant classic.
Blue Is The Warmest Color
Blue Is The Warmest Color is far from a perfect movie, something you might expect with a near 3 hour running time, and it’s in part to that imperfection that it can be counted as a great film. Blue is far less a coming out story than it is a coming-of-age story. Instantly relatable, this remarkable French film is one of the best movies you’ll ever see about love.
