Hunting is practised in various countries around the world – including Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Australia. Much of the hunting for big game will take place in Africa, with popular destinations being Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Tanzania. However, hunting is also practised in other regions, and to be considered, requires a specific knowledge of the animals and the ammunition necessary to conduct such a hobby.
In terms of the type of ammunition required, this will be dependent upon the size of animal, rather than the country. A popular type of ammunition among hunters is the 9mm Luger. This is suitable for small game and larger game at closer distances.
So, to a few of the different regions.
Types of Animals Hunted in Different Continents
The range and type of animals hunted will vary depending on the part of the world that they are to be found. This difference is due to the diversity of the animals that there are available to hunt, the climate that exists, and the local taste for such animals. The legalization of certain types of hunting in these regions is also a factor.
Below some examples are listed for North America and Europe.
North America (Canada and the United States):
Big Game – American Bison, Bighorn Sheep, Elk, White-tailed deer, Wild Boar.
Smaller Game: Beaver, Coyote, Racoon, Rattlesnake, Squirrel.
Birds – Dove, Crow, Duck, Goose, Grouse, Partridge, Quail, Turkey.
European Countries such as the UK:
Big Game – Fallow Deer, Red Deer, Roe Deer.
Small Game – Brown Hare, Rabbit.
Birds – Duck, Goose, Red Grouse, Wood Pigeon.
It should be noted that the black grouse can no longer be hunted because of its decline in numbers.
Nordic Countries:
Big Game: Boar, Fallow Deer, Red Deer, Roe Deer.
Small Game: Mountain Hare.
Birds: Black Grouse, Common Pheasant, Common Wood Pigeon, Goose, Mallard.
In Southern Sweden and Denmark, the Boar was once hunted to extinction but was re-introduced in the late twentieth century and now hunted again. It has become something of a pest to farmers, but a prized kill for hunters.
These lists are not exhaustive, just to give an idea of what can be hunted in the different countries that make up these continents. Certain species are, of course, common to all these regions.
The Weapons Used
The different types of weapons available to the hunter include Handguns, Powerheads, Rifles, and Shotguns. The handgun can be fired with one hand or two, but without a shoulder support can be more challenging to fire. But then, hunters like a challenge. A Powerhead, also known as a Bang Stick, fires a cartridge and then relies on the muzzle blast to kill the target. Shotguns are for hunting small game because they are designed to only fire small projectiles and in a single shot. Rifles such as a 0.22, on the other hand, will be used for killing larger game. They are supported on the shoulder and are by far the most accurate for hunting with.
The Different Types of Ammunition Used
In 2006, Frank Barnes notes that the most widely used of the cartridges in the United States was the 9mm Luger. It became popular for use in compact and small guns that could be carried and intended primarily for self-defence. At 25 yards or closer a 9mm pistol has the capabilities to kill a deer. Primarily, it can be used to kill small game.
It can be observed that whatever region we are in, the same weapons are now being used, and the same types of ammunition decisions being made. This makes the internet a wonderful source of supply for bullets and cartridges worldwide.
