These days, gadgets such as smartphone and tablets can help us tell the time but that doesn’t stop many people from wearing watches. Classic timepieces from the likes of TicWatches are as handy as they are fashionable and with many designs, colours and brands available you can be sure to find something that matches your personality and style.

While watches range in price, it seems collectors and watch fanatics alike are prepared to shell out a sizable sum for the perfect model, so let’s take a closer look at some of the most expensive watches ever made:

The Henry Graves Supercomplication
The Henry Graves Supercomplication timepiece made headlines last year when it sold at auction for a whopping 20.6m Swiss francs (£13.4m). Handmade by Patek Philippe in 1932, this yellow-gold pocket watch has 24 complications – a technical term which refers to any feature on a watch which is an addition to telling the time – including Westminster chimes, a perpetual calendar, sunrise and sunset times and a celestial map of New York as seen from Graves’ apartment on Fifth Avenue. The watch even maps the correct spacing and magnitude of the stars, rotates with the sky and with an impressive 900 parts remains the most complicated watch to have been built without the assistance of computers.

Platinum World Time
Patek Phillippe is world-renowned for producing incredibly expensive yet extraordinarily beautiful watches with sophisticated features and the Platinum World Time is no exception. Sold at auction for over $4 million USD back in 2002, this self-winding watch not only has a range of finishes to choose from including rose, white and yellow gold (and of course, platinum), but it also lives up to its name by allowing the wearer to find the time anywhere in the world from Paris to Milan. It is believed that only one of these watches was ever made and, at the time of action, the Platinum World Time became the most expensive wristwatch in the world.

Chopard Super Ice Cube
Ever wondered what $1.1 million USD would buy? Well, take a look at the Chopard Super Ice Cube, a luxurious Swiss-made watch which boasts 60-carats of diamonds cut into perfect, ever-glistening cubes. This wonderfully stunning bracelet and timepiece is undoubtedly beautiful but it’s also practical being scratch-resistant and water resistant to 100 feet.

It’ll certainly turn heads, so if you have spare cash to throw around and love anything with a touch of glamour and class then this sparkling sensation could be the perfect design for you. It’s everything you’d expect from this well-known jewellery and watch maker which is why it comes with a pretty hefty price tag.

It’s hard to believe a watch can cost more than a Ferrari or even a house, but this is a reality in the world we live in. The complexity of design, complications and materials used play a big part in boosting the cost as well as when and by whom the timepiece was made. But sometimes it’s worth paying more for something uniquely breath-taking, right?
