When Stade Louis II appeared on the brand new Fontvieille landscape more than 30 years ago, it was considered the height of sporting sophistication, with a first-rate football pitch, Olympic swimming pool and enviable gymnasium right in the heart of Monaco’s premier residential area. Indeed, Stade Louis II offered first-class sport in Monaco facilities.
But, fast-forward three decades and the now famous nine-arched building, which also came to house the principality’s very own international university, has begun to look slightly tired. With state-of-the-art facilities springing up elsewhere across the principality it became evident that a modernisation programme might well be the order of the day to ensure sport in Monaco continues to shine.
When the International University of Monaco decided to make a move to a brand new campus in rue Hubert-Clerissi, underneath the recently completed Le Stella building, it seemed the perfect time for a renovation project which would give a new boost to sport in Monaco.
The ambitious renovation project, which has been rolled out in several stages, is now almost complete with the Centre Nautique Albert II reopening at the beginning of December after a lengthy closure.
One of the main focuses on the renovation project was of course to improve facilities for players and supporters of the AS Monaco FC with new luxury lodges and enhanced access to the stadium.
The sports’ complex also includes the Salle Gaston Medecin, home to the successful AS Monaco’s Roca Basketball team, as well as the Athletics Centre, where the international Hercules track event is held.
But Stade Louis II is not just a centre of excellence for professional sportsmen and women. It is also used by more than 2,000 school children every week who use the facilities for their school activities as well as being home to the majority of sporting associations in the principality.
A boost to sports in Monaco
More than 15 sporting associations operate out of Stade Louis II including gymnastics, judo, fencing and table tennis, to name but a few of the sports in Monaco open to residents. Members of these associations will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of the renovation project including the modernisation of the gymnasium, new changing facilities and an overhaul of the Olympic-size swimming pool.
The sporting campus of Stade Louis II is a huge consideration to many families looking to buy property for sale in Fontvieille, with first-class facilities right on the doorstep of many of the principality’s most sought-after addresses.
