Those that require the use of a wheelchair, or those that care for somebody that does, know just how difficult and stressful it can be to arrange a trip out. Unfortunately, many areas of the UK are not particularly wheelchair friendly which can make accessing certain areas a challenge. This is changing, though, and there are some fantastic wheelchair accessible places to visit, including the following.
Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh
Listed as the number 1 tourist activity in the UK on TripAdvisor, the Royal Yacht Britannia is entirely wheelchair accessible with ramps and lifts along with friendly staff that are willing to help. This is particularly impressive considering it is a ship and it is highly worth a visit as the former yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
The Science Museum, London
The Science Museum is one of the most fun and educational tourist spots in the UK, but it is also one of the more accessible. In addition to being fully wheelchair accessible, the museum also regularly hosts fantastic events for disabled visitors. With many interactive exhibits covering a wide range of science topics, this is a great place to learn in a fun and immersive setting.
Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh
Another Edinburgh tourist attraction that is highly accessible for wheelchair users, the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens goes the extra mile by offering visitors mobility issues their own power scooters and wheelchairs. There are also many regular stopping points throughout the beautiful gardens, allowing you to relax and soak up your amazing surroundings.
Cadbury World, Birmingham
Chocolate lover? The spectacular Cadbury World in Birmingham is a fascinating and fun place that will educate you all about chocolate and it is also one of the more accessible destinations. Wheelchair users can easily navigate the site with lifts, ramps and low-level exhibits throughout, whilst there are also accessible toilet facilities on each floor and ample parking for a wheelchair accessible vehicle – these are available from specialists like Allied Mobility.
Brighton Dome
Thanks to a refurb not too long ago, this Grade 1 listed building can be easy to explore via wheelchair with ramps, lifts and audio devices found throughout. The Brighton Dome encompasses three separate venues, so this is a great area to head if you want to experience some culture too.
Places throughout the UK are gradually becoming more wheelchair friendly, but there are still many great places that have made this a priority which can make organising a day out simple and easy.
