One of the biggest fears a drone enthusiast can have is the quadcopter landing in water. This of course is in addition to it crashing into a tree and smashing into a million tiny bits. Before a faulty/drained battery or other issue has causes your drone to land in a stream, pond, lake, river, fjord, or the great blue sea, check out a few tips concerning what to do:
Get It Out Immediately
It’s not exactly shocking to note that the longer your drone remains submerged, the more damage it will incur. Remove your drone from the body of water as soon as possible to begin the drying process.
Rinse
Should your drone, such as the Phantom 2 Vision+, land in seawater, remove it, take it apart, and rinse it with fresh water as soon as possible. Let it dry fully before attempting to piece it together again. If your drone landed in fresh water, it’s still a good idea to rinse it, unless you want it to reek of pond from now on.
Call Tech Support
Have you allowed your drone to dry? Did you put it back together and find it’s in failsafe mode and won’t do much of anything? Now it a good time to call your manufacturer’s tech support. Any drone brand worth its weight in proverbial salt, such as 3D Robotics and DJI, has an outstanding tech support system. Call or email to discuss the damage and determine the best course of action.
Prepare For the Worst
Keep in mind that your drone might be beyond saving. This depends greatly on the model and what waterproof features, if any, it includes. In other words, if you live in an area surrounded by assorted bodies of water, you might want to invest in a drone that can withstand a little wet.
