North Florida offers a diverse opportunity for discovery. This part of the state is known as “Old Florida” as it was the modern heyday vacation spot of the mid 20th century. Steeped in history while spanning two coastlines, there is much to explore while visiting so plan to stay awhile. Places that should be on your go-to list will make this vacation a memorable one, so be sure to take plenty of pictures.
Jacksonville
Offering many attractions, you may want to plan to explore this sprawling city for a few days. Beautiful Atlantic beaches to a happening art scene. You’ll be delighted with museums, public gardens, Broadway shows at the TH Center, and world-class golf courses like TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach or Blue Sky golf in Jacksonville. Spring offers a mild climate with flourishing flora and fauna. The beaches are perfect to begin the skill of surfing at any age.
St. Augustine
If you are a fan of US history, then this city should be high on your list of places to visit. Having been established over 450 years ago, St. Augustine is steeped in military history. Fort Matanzas and Castillo de San Marco provide adventure during all four seasons, but I prefer early spring and late fall for the best climate. You may want to take a ghost tour while you are visiting there.
Gainesville
Home of the University of Florida, you will be visiting a college town with charming architecture, its own large sinkhole, as well as an active bar scene. Nature hikes are popular here with plenty of local wildlife to view even through a camera lens. Fall is the beginning of the sports season, so grab a ticket for some great college sports action.
Ocala
If you are a nature and animal lover, Ocala offers plenty of both. Known as the horse country of Florida, this northern central part of the state has plenty to offer. It is also known for its protected pine forest which is the largest in the world. Silver Springs State Park offers plenty of hiking trails, local wildlife, and beautiful lakes. The climate is mild during Fall, Winter, and Spring.
Pensacola
Known for its pristine beaches of white sand and beautiful waters. it might be hard to tear yourself away from spending all your time lounging in the sun. Remember, you have to eat, so enjoying the local seafood is a must. A spin around town will reward you with views of local architecture that date back to the mid 19th century is well worth the time. A great place to visit all year long.
Tallahassee
This town boasts of being the home of Florida State University among many of its assets. Antique cars, museums, canoeing, hiking, and an active nightlife all play a part of Tallahassee’s charm. Be sure to visit the locally landscaped gardens in the spring and summer for some of nature’s eye candy. Fall, winter, and spring are good for some college sports action.
